The aphrodisiac effects
of the authentic Dominican mamajuana

Mamajuana is seen and advertised in the Dominican Republic as an aphrodisiac or afrodisiac liquor, with many people describing it as a type of natural "liquid Viagra".  Women have also claimed that mamajuana enhances their sexual desire. Although mamajuana became famous for their supposed ability to stimulate the libido, the drink was originally regarded as a cure-all that was an effective treatment for many ailments from a common cold, or influenza, right through to far more serious conditions. This reputation may have derived from traditional remedies handed down through the ages from as far back as the times when the ancient tribes inhabited the island. Whatever the truth about mamajuana's efficacy there have been a number of recent, and reputable scientific studies that have confirmed the potentially positive healthful effects of some of the typical herbal and botanical ingredients that may be used in the brewing of the liquor. Examples could be said to include resveratrol, in red wine, thought to enhance longevity, the use of cinnamon in blood sugar control for diabetes sufferers, and the presence of condensed tannins. Studies into some of the rarer botanical herbs, roots and barks used in making mamajuana are still ongoing.

Is mamajuana an afrodisiac?

Proanthocyanidin, also known as procyanidin, and condensed tannins, is a class of flavanols. Proanthocyanidins can be found in many plants, most notably apples, pine bark, cinnamon, cocoa, grape seed, grape skin (red wines). However, cranberry, black currant, green tea ,black tea, and other plants also contain these flavonoids. Proanthocyanidins are essentially polymer chains of flavonoids such as catechins. One was discovered in 1936 by Professor Jacques Masquelier and called Vitamin P, although this name did not gain official category status [Wikipedia].

The presence of Proanthocyanidins in certain ingredients used in the making of mamajuana may very well be the reason why mamajuana supposedly has a positive effect on Potency.

So when somebody tells you that mamajuana has vitamin P, and that it will give you "mucho potencia" he actually may be telling you the truth.

Proanthocyanidins found in pine bark and grape seed extract work directly to help strengthen all the blood vessels and improve the delivery of oxygen to the cells. Other effects may include depressing blood fat, emolliating blood vessels, lowering blood pressure, preventing blood vessel scleroses and dropping blood viscidity.

Strong and healthy blood vessels are necessary in order to be able to have a healthy sex life, both for men as well as for women. When there is insufficient blood supply to the genital area during sex, the whole experience is known to be less satisfactionary.

Is mamajuana a cure-all?

So why is mamajuana told to be a cure-all? Again the tannins would be responsible for this. According to Wikipedia tannins may be employed medicinally in antidiarrheal, hemostatic, and antihemorrhoidal compounds.

The anti-inflammatory effects of tannins help control all indications of gastritis, esophagitis, enteritis, and irritating bowel disorders. This is probably the reason why many people like to drink mamajuana Kalembu as an digestif.

Tannins not only heal burns and stop bleeding, but they also stop infection while they continue to heal the wound internally. The ability of tannins to form a protective layer over the exposed tissue keeps the wound from being infected even more. Tannins are also beneficial when applied to the mucosal lining of the mouth.Tannins can also be effective in protecting the kidneys. Tannins have been used for immediate relief of sore throats, diarrhea, dysentery, hemorrhaging, fatigue, skin ulcers and as a cicatrizant on gangrenous wounds.
Many Dominicans swear by mamajuana as a cold reliever, this probably due to the fact that tannins have also been reported to have anti-viral effects. When incubated with red grape juice and red wines with a high content of condensed tannins, the poliovirus, herpes simplex virus, and various enteric viruses are inactivated. [Bajaj, Y. P. S. (1988).
